How to Keep Your Hair Healthy – 11 Steps

how to keep your hair healthy

I am very sure we will all like to have healthy, shiny and attractive hair. The question is how will you achieve this feat? I promise after reading this article you will thank me for writing on how to keep your hair healthy. Nobody will dispute the fact that having shiny and string hair boosts one’s confidence and gives you a special feeling. This article will explain a few steps you can take to achieve this.

1. Washing and drying your hair

Most people get this wrong. Some people wash their hair every day with the product which tends to have the detrimental effect on the hair. It’s advisable to wash the hair at most twice a week. If you are the type with an oily hair and you need to wash it daily then it’s advisable you use every day or lightweight shampoo because it contains milder detergent than other hair wash.

After using hair shampoo, ensure you make use of a good conditioner to help in moisturizing your hair. Using the conditioner will help soften your hair and makes it was up to brush or combWhen using conditioner, try to make use of a leave-in conditioner at least once in a week to help heal your hair cuticles.

2. Use a comb

This may sound funny but do you know using a comb will help in keeping your hair healthy. Research and studies have shown that, unlike dry hair. When the hair is wet, it is not more susceptible to damage because it is very fragile.

Wet hair is more susceptible to damage than dry hair. It is more elastic and more likely to break. Since hair is most fragile when it’s wet. You shouldn’t rip a brush through it after washing. Instead you should spray some detangler on it, and then use a wide-tooth comb to remove tangles and minimize breakage.

Remember to start from the ends up not from the roots down. Once hair is dry avoid unnecessary brushing, combing or handling. Using your fingers to comb through your hair while wet can cause damage and hair loss. Make sure to wait until after your shower to comb out any tangles.

3. Buy Shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type.

Get a shampoo and conditioner that is dry, greasy, fine and continue using it. Irrespective of your hair type there are hair specialists that will handle it and also products that suit your hair.

4. Avoid using the Towel to dry the hair

  • Most of us don’t know that our hairs are more fragile when wet. So using towels on our dry hair can rough up the hair cuticle and damage the hair.
  • This towel won’t just damage the hair but it would rather cause breakage which will definitely lead to a hair that is fluffy or frizzy
  • Bottom line: Don’t use a towel to rub your hair, rather blot your hair with the towel. You can also try to purchase towels with high absorbent quality. A very good example is the Turkish towel.

5. Don’t use hair dryer regularly.

Using hair dryers frequently can lead to split hair ends or hair breakage. So it’s therefore advisable to allow the hair dry naturally without the use of hair dryers. But the situation warrants you to use a dryer, then don’t use it close to your hair as the hair may burn.

Before drying your hair, try to make use of serum or heat protection spray. Using this spray will help in reducing hair breakage. You can also make use of ionic dryer which minimizes the exposure of the hair to heat and dries the hair within a limited period of time.

6. Make use of hair mask on the hair at least once in thirty days.

Hair masks serve as the good conditioner and help the hair look soft and shiny. Getting a hair mask that suits one hairstyle and using them at least once in a month will help the hair look healthier.

Note: Serums can also be used. Use serum on the hair when the hair is wet or when it is freshly blow-dried.  When using serum, ensure you use them in very small quantity.

7. Heat protection

Heat protection can also be used to make the hair healthy. The hair does not love the heat. So using heat protection at the required level and condition will help reduce hair burning and hair breakage. You can also use some heat protection products like the mousses, creams, sprays and so on to protect the hair. Also, there are some products called UV shielding products. These products help in shielding the hair from the adverse effect of the Ultraviolet rays (UV).

Note: when using the UV shielding products, ensure the hair is damp so the products can sink down into the head.

8. Take diets that help in maintaining good hair quality.

  • Take foods that contain high Zinc, vitamin D content and omega-3 fatty acid. This is because they are both imperative in having a strong and healthy hair.
  • Foods that contain zinc, Vitamin D and the Omega-3 fatty acid include fish, eggs, beefs, grain breads, fortified cereals, salmon, oysters, trout, spinach, mackerel, sardines, walnut, pumpkin and avocado seeds, etc.
  • Proteins also help the hair.
  • Yogurt is a very rich source of protein and it also contains vitamin   B5 which serves as the natural hair conditioner. Some dairy products like cheese, skim milk are also of benefit.
  • Additionally taking foods/fruits like blueberries, poultry and supplements will help the hair holistically.

9. Trim your hair

It’s advisable you trim your hair every 6-8 weeks to get rid of dead and split ends. Doing this will definitely keep the hair in shape.

  • Protect your hair with a hat, scarf, bandana or cap.
  • Putting on all this will protect the hair from the harmful ultraviolet rays (UV rays).

10. Don’t tie the hair too tightly

  • Whenever you are tying your hair, avoid tying too tight. You can also make a routine to keep hair healthy.
  • Tie to the left today, to the right tomorrow, backward on the next day and so on.  Doing this will relieve the stress on the hair.

Note: When tying your hair, avoid using metal bands because they can cause serious damage to the hair.

11. Exercise the general body system

  • Exercise is what we do in order to be strong, healthy and to feel happy. Engaging in exercise makes you happy and also stimulates the production of some hormones that will help in maintaining good hair quality.
  • Also, avoid stressing the body system. There is a clear-cut difference between exercise and stress.  Stress has detrimental effects like reflecting an awkward outward appearance, thinner hair and so.
  • Therefore avoiding stress wi8lll also help in keeping the hair healthy.
  • Do not sleep on a cotton pillow.
  • This is because the cotton pillow has high absorbent rate and can dry out the hair.
  • Avoid sleeping with a ponytail too as it can lead to hair breakage.
